Yurii Alieksienko: How Children’s Content Became Global And Why It Matters

Just ten years ago, children’s content remained largely a local phenomenon. Television channels produced a limited number of cartoons and educational programs designed for regional audiences.

However, the rise of digital platforms—especially YouTube—has changed everything. Today, children’s content is a standalone industry that can rival movies and TV series in terms of production quality, global influence, and audience engagement.

“Ten years ago, most children’s shows were created exclusively for television, and no one could have imagined that content produced without major studios could reach millions of viewers worldwide,” says Yurii Alieksienko, a director who began his career in the music industry and now works on creating leading children’s content.

According to him, the modern world is evolving rapidly, and children’s content is not only adapting to global trends but also shaping new ones. In the past, each country produced its own cartoons, programs, and shows for a limited audience. Today, the most popular children’s channels reach viewers all over the world. Video is no longer dependent on language—visual imagery, intonation, and editing dynamics create a universal language that children of any culture can understand.

THE UNIQUE ASPECTS OF CREATING CHILDREN’S CONTENT

Creating children’s content requires not only technical expertise but also a deep understanding of child psychology. As a director and cinematographer, you must consider how a child perceives each frame. It is essential to build a clear sequence of emotions that are easy to understand. Every action or reaction of a character must logically fit into the storyline and emotional context.

“Children process information differently from adults. They need clear emotional signals to understand what is happening on the screen. If a character is happy, it should be obvious through facial expressions, color schemes, and music. Adults can understand subtext or subtle hints, but children need explicit visual messaging,” explains Yurii.

This skill comes only with experience and deep analysis. Many professionals begin their journey by studying and analyzing vast amounts of content on YouTube, identifying which formats and techniques are most effective for young audiences.

In addition, media platforms constantly change content creation rules, introducing new restrictions and requirements. To comply with these rules, creators must closely monitor YouTube policies, which strictly regulate what materials can be shown, how children can be engaged in videos, and which topics are appropriate.

All these nuances require great attention to detail and constant adaptation to modern realities.

“A children’s content director must not only be creative but also legally knowledgeable. There are strict rules regarding advertising, data protection, and ethical considerations. Content must meet child safety standards, and this is a vast area of knowledge that is not readily available—it is acquired only by those deeply involved in the industry,” Alieksienko adds.

MAKING CONTENT ACCESSIBLE TO ALL CHILDREN

One of the most important aspects of children’s content creation is accessibility. Children who cannot yet read, children with hearing impairments, or those with special needs must all have equal access to video content.

“We work to ensure that every child—regardless of developmental differences—can understand the storyline. If a child cannot read subtitles, they should grasp the meaning through visual symbols. If they cannot hear, scene changes, character movements, and color schemes should convey the story instead of sound,” explains Yurii.

Moreover, many modern children’s shows now feature characters with disabilities. This not only makes content more accessible but also helps shape children’s understanding and acceptance of diversity in society.

THE IMPACT OF DIGITAL CONTENT ON CHILDREN’S THINKING

The modern children’s media industry faces challenges driven by technological progress.

Today’s children consume content very differently from previous generations. Short-form videos, fast editing, and constant information shifts create a new type of perception often referred to as “clip thinking.”

“Children develop a habit of receiving quick emotional stimuli. They become accustomed to instant gratification and rapid plot changes. This can negatively affect their ability to focus, analyze long narratives, and develop logical thinking. Our goal is not just to create short entertaining content but to integrate elements of learning, development, and critical thinking,” emphasizes Alieksienko.

THE FUTURE OF CHILDREN’S CONTENT

Children’s content is no longer merely part of the entertainment industry—it is a powerful segment that shapes new generations and influences their thinking, education, and social adaptation.

“The main goal of modern children’s content is not just to entertain but to educate, foster empathy, and help children explore the world in a safe environment. If we, as creators, acknowledge this responsibility, we can produce truly meaningful content that will shape the future,” concludes Yurii Alieksienko.
